When is Black Friday 2022: Everything you need to know about the Black Friday sale

In previous years, we’ve seen more than 70 per cent off the latest noise-cancelling headphones, plenty of tellys of the high-end variety costing less than a grand and major discounts falling on all your fashion needs, and when we say the majority of retailers take part, we really mean it.

At a glance, last year’s retailers included: Amazon, John Lewis, Currys, Argos, Reiss, Simba, Mr Porter, Lovehoney, Uniqlo, Selfridges, Bose, EE and many, many more, so expect the usual suspects to be taking part.

Why is it called Black Friday?

Signposting the beginning of the extremely busy Christmas shopping period, Black Friday has evolved considerably since it was popularized back in the ’80s. It used to be the time of year where retailers would stop running at a loss and start shifting their profit books from negative-red to positive-black, as they made all their annual revenue during the mad rush of the holiday season in the USA. It was also an unwritten gentlemen’s agreement between American stores not to start advertising Christmas sales until after the Thanksgiving parade, which would be quite literally the first minute of Friday morning.

These days it just means: “Bloody great opportunity to grab some huge discounts on some stuff you want”. That might not have the same ring to it, but certainly remains true. Fun Fact of the day: Black Friday in Welsh is ‘Dydd Gwener y Gwario Gwirion’, which translates to ‘Silly Spending Friday’, so we’ll let you decide which one you prefer using.

When is Black Friday?

Taking place the weekend after Thanksgiving, the Black Friday sales always fall within the final weekend of November, which just so happens to be the 25th this year. Sales officially begin at a minute past midnight on the Friday morning and will stretch throughout the weekend, before ending at midnight on Monday, which has been affectionately called Cyber Monday (more on that below).
