Virginia Community College Students Encouraged to Apply for NASA Research Experiences

HAMPTON — The Virginia Space Grant Consortium announced applications for its 2023 STEM Takes Flight NASA Research Experiences for Virginia’s Community College students are now open.

Since 2015, the program has given community college sophomores throughout the state the opportunity to apply for paid NASA research experiences at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton and NASA Goddard Space Flight Center’s Wallops Flight Facility on the Eastern Shore.

The program takes place over ten weeks during the summer and over 20 positions are available, according to the Virginia Space Grant Consortium. All projects are STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) oriented. The hands-on learning experiences have led many to attain future internships and permanent positions with NASA, the consortium said.

Qualified applicants ahould be undergraduate community college STEM majors, including those pursuing technician degrees, who are at least a rising sophomore and not graduating prior to May 2023. Applicants must be US citizens, at least 18 years of age, and a full or part- time student taking a minimum of six credit hours. Selected students will receive a $6,000 stipend.
