Three small businesses are the recipients of $10,000 grants in the Town of South Bruce Peninsula.

My Main Street and the Town of South Bruce Peninsula have awarded the first round of funding to downtown Wiarton businesses.

Symon Says and Your Local Meat Shoppe & More have each been awarded $10,000 to support their existing businesses and $10,000 has been awarded to new business Great Ape Empire.

Simon Says is a downtown Wiarton Gift Shop with local and Canadian items including baby clothes that say ‘Made In Canada’ on them, funny greeting cards, local crafts and art, maple syrup from Neyaashiinigmiing, pottery and more.

Your Local Meat Shoppe and More offers Gray and Bruce County pre-packaged Lamb, Goat, Chicken, Pork, Fish & Buffalo, including Halal. They also offer a selection of sheep and goat dairy products.

The Great Ape Empire is a new Canadian veteran owned business which sells and rents hiking, camping, survivalist and adventuring equipment and apparel in downtown Wiarton.

The money comes from the My Main Street Local Business Accelerator Program.

A release from the Town says, “Main streets play a vital role in growing the Canadian economy and supporting local communities.”

There are up to five $10,000 non-repayable contributions to support existing business and up to five $10,000 non-repayable contributions to attract new business. The town says this is the first round of businesses to be selected.

The Town’s Manager of Economic Development and Communications, Danielle Edwards says in a statement, “This program provides existing business the support needed post pandemic and provides a financial incentive to attract new business to this recently revitalized downtown district.”

Mayor Janice Jackson states, “A thriving downtown is so important to the local economy, and we are thrilled to be able to support businesses in such a meaningful way.”

The Government of Canada, through FedDev Ontario, has been providing funding opportunities and business services with the aim of supporting innovation, growth and job creation.

The Economic Developers Council of Ontario (EDCO) is delivering the My Main Street, Local Business Accelerator program stream, providing non-repayable contributions for more than 650 local businesses across southern Ontario.
