Summerville future coming to a head with Prem rival plotting to torpedo Marsch plan

The future of under-used Leeds winger Crysencio Summerville is reaching a crossroads with Nottingham Forest among a cluster of clubs plotting to torpedo new contract talks, per reports.

The Dutchman, 20, signed at Elland Road in the summer of 2020. Summerville featured heavily in the Netherlands youth ranks, though has found game-time hard to come by in West Yorkshire.

Indeed, Summerville’s tally of senior appearances after two campaigns at Leeds stands at just eight.

The vast bulk of his time has been spent with the club’s Under-23s. His six goals in 12 appearances in the Premier League 2 last year indicate he is too good for that level.

The Athletic’s Phil Hay reported last weekend that Leeds and manager Jesse Marsch are currently in discussions over a fresh contract for the flyer.

However, the trusted journalist also noted Leeds had not made it clear he’d be allowed to leave on loan even if a new deal were signed.

His current contract is due to expire in 2023. As such, the likes of Nottingham Forest and Sheffield Utd were claimed to be exploring a move to capitalize on the uncertainty.

Now, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has provided a fresh update on the state of play.

Forest, AZ Alkmaar heighten Leeds tension

Romano reaffirmed Premier League new boys Forest are indeed in for Summerville. However, Dutch side AZ Alkmaar are among ‘many’ other clubs sensing an opportunity. The prospect of a return to his native Netherlands will obviously have an appeal.

From Leeds’ end, they’re deemed hard at work trying to forge a contract extension. Negotiations are described as ongoing with the club hoping to make a breakthrough ‘as soon as possible’.

But if contract talks stall, it now appears Summerville will have a wide selection of intriguing offers to choose from.

Common sense would dictate Summerville would be sold this summer if contract talks break down. If Leeds get their way and a new deal is signed, an exit may still come via the loan route.

What’s holding Summerville back?

Summerville remains one of Leeds ’most potent threats in the Under-23s, though chances to prove his worth in the senior team have been few and far between.

His six league outings last term amounted to just 126 minutes of action. That’s despite those above him – barring Raphinha and Jack Harrison – struggling all season.

Indeed, Daniel James flopped after his £ 25m arrival from Manchester United. Rodrigo fared a little better, while Tyler Roberts continued to be ineffective when deployed in a variety of positions in the final third.

Yet that quintet all seem to have held both Marcelo Bielsa and Marsch’s favor when it mattered most.

Raphinha may be sold this summer. Though the huge fee generated would likely see a suitable replacement or two signed. That will ensure Summerville’s path to regular football will be no clearer.

Phil Hay noted Summerville will demand game-time assurances before penning fresh terms. If Leeds can’t make that promise, they will have little choice but to sell this summer.
