Money saving tip: Households could save ‘over £1,000’ on annual bills by softening water | Personal Finance | Finance

While Britons face the new two-year energy price guarantee, which boosted energy bills for an average household up to £2,500 per year, many have been seeking ways to reduce costs. While most have been turning to electricity tips and tricks to save money, softening the water supply could be another effective way to make a significant saving.

The UK’s water supply varies in hardness depending on the location. Hardness is primarily determined by the amount of calcium and magnesium the water contains.

The harder the water, the higher the content of these minerals will be present. However, hard water can often cause fairly costly problems due to its impact on pipework.

But, these costly problems could now have been substantiated, as research by Harvey Water Softeners showed that switching to soft water could save households up to £1,100 a year across household bills, detergents, cleaning, and toiletry costs, and appliance maintenance and repairs.

This is because people tend to end up using significantly fewer products, due to the benefits of using soft water.

“This reduces the overall efficiency of a heating and plumbing system, resulting in higher energy bills. With smoother running appliances, consumers could save up to £115.88 on gas and electricity.”

With less limescale build-up appliances will work better and last longer, £181.90 can be saved on appliance maintenance and repairs.

Tony Jones, general manager at Harvey Water Softeners said: “For those living in a hard water area, one way of offsetting soaring energy bills over the long-term is to install a water softener.

“As indicated by our research, doing so will help many individuals and families bring down their annual energy bills and improve the efficiency of their heating system.”

  • South West – 258ppm – £1062.75

Mr Jones said: “Softened water can benefit everyone, which is why there are flexible options available and a variety of sizes to fit any home, with friendly UK-based experts on hand for ongoing support.”
