Martin County School District investigates racist social media photo


MARTIN COUNTY – A racist photo circulating on social media has been confirmed as authentic, and an investigation into its origin is continuing, the school district said Tuesday.

The photo was taken at Hidden Oaks Middle School, the school district said on a Facebook post Tuesday.

The district announced late Monday in a Facebook post it was investigating a “concerning” photo that shows students holding up letters that spell out a racial slur.

Although the students will be “provided the due process afforded under federal and state law,” Superintendent John Millay said in a statement Tuesday, the district is “appalled” and “saddened by this incident, which is contrary to our values ​​and the ideals that are instilled in our students. ”

The investigation is expected to be finalized within the next two days, he said. The district has not identified the students but they will face “appropriate disciplinary consequences,” he said.

The district “will continue to strive towards fostering a learning environment free of bigotry and racism,” Millay said.
