She posted part one and part two of a new series explaining the mistakes that are likely to decrease the value of your home.

Katie outlines six mistakes, starting with carpeting.

Filling your home with carpet may seem like the right decision, but Katie argues it’s not.

“It’s hard to clean, and it retains odors,” she says.

Next, converting your garage is not the best idea.

People like to have a place to put their car, and if you don’t have a garage, buyers may not want your house.

While this is out of your control, Katie says it’s important to avoid having hoarder neighbors.

“They’ll lower your sale price,” she admits.

And having noisy neighbors doesn’t help either.

Your home is your space until it’s time to sell it.

The color scheme you chose may have been the right one for you, but not for potential buyers.

Unusual color combinations and too much personalization will not be good for your chances of selling.

Finally, living next to a hospital sounds convenient.

However, Katie explains that it decreases your home’s value by 3.2 percent because of the ambulance noise.
