NEW CUMBERLAND – The Hancock County Board of Education completed its annual evaluation of Superintendent Dawn Petrovich Thursday, with members saying she has met or exceeded all categories established by the West Virginia Board of Education.

The announcement was made Thursday as part of a special meeting at Oak Glen High School.

The school board had convened in another special session Tuesday, according to Danny Kaser, who was presiding over his final meeting as board president, with members meeting for approximately two hours to perform the review as outlined by state officials.

The evaluation, Kaser said, focuses on the student achievement in the county, both in general and, more specifically, in low-performing schools. Kaser noted Hancock County has not had any schools considered “Low-performing” for several years.

“Ms. Petrovich has met or exceeded the goals set for her, “ Kaser said, offering his congratulations.

According to the West Virginia School Board Association, an evaluation of each county school superintendent is to be held at least annually, to review given objectives, student performance across the county, as well as areas such as community relations, leadership of the district and other. determined areas.

“The evaluations all focus on student success,” Kaser said following the meeting.

Under state code, the evaluation is to be held in executive session, with the board making a general public statement as to the results. Additional information, such as compensation and contractual terms may be released if both the board and superintendent consent.

Attending Thursday’s meeting in addition to Kaser were board members Larry Shaw and Chris Gillette. Board member Toni Hinerman participated by telephone.

Petrovich was named the superintendent of Hancock County Schools in 2019, signing a four-year contract with the school district. Prior to being named superintendent, she served as assistant superintendent of schools under the previous two superintendents, has served as county test coordinator, principal at Broadview Elementary and assistant principal at Weir Middle and Allison Elementary.

In other business, the board, by a 3-1 vote, approved the creation of seven new certified positions for the 2022-23 school year: a multi-categorical / autism teacher at Oak Glen Middle; a mutli-categorical / autism teacher at Allison Elementary; an assistant principal at New Manchester Elementary; an assistant principal at Weirton Elementary; a school counselor at Weirton Elementary; a school counselor at the John D. Rockefeller IV Career Center; and a countywide LPN aid who will be based at Weirton Elementary.

The board also approved, 4-0, the transfers of Carla Carinci-Bell to assistant principal at Weirton Elementary; Mary Ann Petrelle to school counselor at Weirton Elementary; Kayla Warrick to grade 5 teacher at Weir Middle; Kaitlin Karpinski to kindergarten teacher at Allison Elementary; and Amanda Schey to grade 1 teacher at Weirton Elementary; as well as approving the hiring of Troy Whittaker as math teacher at Weir High School and approving Randy Kernen as an assistant football coach at Weir Middle School.
