Gippsland, Victoria: Two arrested after unmarked police car allegedly stolen

Police have arrested two men following a chase that ended with an allegedly stolen police car crashing into another vehicle.

Officers were called to a home in Glengarry after responding to an aggravated burglary report about 1:20pm on Friday.

Two men are alleged to have broken into the Main Street residence while brandishing “edged weapons” before fleeing the scene in a previously stolen vehicle.

Police chased the pair for 25 kilometers to Yallourne where the pair then lost control of the vehicle and ran it into a ditch after turning into a dead-end street.

During what the police described as a “dynamic arrest” of a 20-year-old Peninsula man, the second offender allegedly stole an unmarked police car.

He allegedly made off with the vehicle for 26 kilometers before the stolen police car and another vehicle collided at the intersection of Princes Highway and Hazeldean Road in Yarragon, police say.

The 63-year-old driver of the other car suffered minor injuries in the collision.

A 29-year-old Cranbourne man, who was uninjured, was arrested at the scene.

Charges have not been laid and both men remain in custody assisting the police.

An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is ongoing including notifying Professional Standards Command who will have oversight of the investigation “as per normal procedure”.
