Gilbane Building Company to build Port of Albany tower plant

Gilbane Building Company has been selected by the Albany Port District Commission (APDC) to serve as the construction manager for a wind tower manufacturing facility at the Port of Albany in Bethlehem, New York. The offshore wind tower manufacturing hub will be among the first of its kind in the United Sates.

The entire project consists of approximately 85 acres at the Port of Albany-Rensselaer with the total development including the construction of approximately 605,000 square feet of manufacturing facilities. The project is a public-private partnership with funding from private sources in addition to state and federal infrastructure and economic development funding.

To remind, the tower facility is being developed for operation by Marmen and Welcon. According to previous announcements, Equinor will combine forces with Marmen and Welcon at the Port of Albany to help the port which will produce components for Equinor’s projects.

Marmen Welcon LLC, a joint venture between the two fabrication firms, has also concluded a strategic alliance with European-based international steel construction company Smulders for the manufacturing of transition pieces at the Port of Albany. It is expected that the highly automated facility will be operational and producing transition pieces by the end of 2023.

Supported by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), the project is the largest manufacturing project of offshore wind towers and foundations in the US.
